The patch should be compatible with few most recent GOG versions. Maybe you have some old version installed? Does this message appear right after you start the patch, or after you click the Update button?

You can try redownloading the installer, and reinstalling the game - the patch should work on that version.

Gizmojunk: I cannot tell anymore, I think it was immediate; when I ran the patch installer. I have just run the installer again, but this time it told me that the update was already installed. Does the update change the 1.7 version number on the game menu? How can one know that the update is in place and working?
If you have "patch already applied" message now, then it means you received the previous error message because something went wrong during patching.

Patch adds DKII-dx.exe and patch.dll to the game directory. If you have them - the game should already be updated.

I guess you got the error message, because the patcher failed to copy those files for some reason - you could try reinstalling the game and running the patch as admin.
