In the far distant future, an epic war for survival takes place. Deep within the Andromeda galaxy, the people of Zile grow restless and greedy. The Zilions secretly prepare for a massive strike against the nearby planet Ytima. Fearing such an attack the Ytimians train an elite squad of "Stargunners." Their mission: To strike the planet Zile first, and cripple the Zilions three strongholds, where the Zilion war fleets await the launch order. If the Stargunners can surprise the Zilions on their own planet, and destroy most of their fleet, then good will triumph at least one more time.
Get them before they get you - there won't be a second chance...

Stargunner is an excellent addition to the game portfolio on GOG. It's one of the last games made by Apogee and was released as freeware Jun 22, 2005.
So, how is it? Well, it's a classic side scrolling shooter with plenty of guns to buy, beautiful VGA graphics and an addictive gameplay the lats 34 levels. The levels are well designed, nice enemy patterns and an absolute awesomeread more soundtrack. If you liked Raptor, you must play Stargunner. And because it's free, you have one more reason to add it to your game page!
Info: The game runs in DosBox. I made my own version with the free game some years ago, but I was a little bit tricky to find the right settings for my system. With this version from GOG, no more stuttering, no more mouse/sound problems, just pure 90s gameplay! Thx a lot, GOG, you're the best!

The last game released by Apogee was a good way to go out. This is a side-scrolling shmup that is still fast and fun. It's definitely influenced by the Gradius series, even including a vocal prompt with each new power up. Enemies have varied attack patterns, and will even speed up and slow down as they approach your ship. And speaking of your ship, power ups are plentiful, andread more there is a fair amount of upgrades available for purchase within the game. The only reason I'm docking a star is for aesthetics: the game features a bright, primary color palette and oversized enemies, while I prefer smaller targets and a darker, grittier feel. The bottom line is this: Just because it's free, doesn't mean it's not worth playing. I'd pay for this. If you're a shmup fan, get it and enjoy!

I played the abandonware version of it like 5 years ago, and it had the same appeal to me as it did when I was just a kid. It's a game a played a lot. It has 3 completely different worlds (Space, Surface, Underwater) with unique enemies and a shop that's not necessarily "buy the most expensive item and you're set" mentality. I like that. Been hoping for this game to appear here for a long time, and now it did, and it's even free. Get it, play it.
