Document the protocol and API of the Galaxy updater client to enable community alternatives
Either make Source-Available with all rights reserved (Copyrighted) or allow us to Clean-Room Engineer it as a community effort. Both compromises that deal with possible concerns you may have, but this lack of communication is disappointing :/ was so excited aswell.
So... How about that 'Source-Available'ness amirite?
This.
This is how GOG will get an edge over Steam, in the open software community.
GOG, please be the herald of open and transparent gaming that you have set yourselves up to be.
Providing an open API for GOG services is a win-win. GOG gets move their talent to improving their services, instead of pushing a client that nobody wants. On top of that, GOG improves their public reputation. While the cost to GOG for this is minimal.
For the community, an open API will provide for the software that perfectly suits their needs for interacting with GOG.
GOG has always been about open-ness in gaming; that is why I continue to support them.
GOG please make this happen; please make us enjoy GOG even more.
Still no update? GOG is still completly excluded from all achievement and game library aggregators and trackers like MetaGamerScore, Exophase, Raptr etc. due to the lack of API. Not to mention that nobody is listing GOG games on their web pages due to the complete lack of affiliate program / referral links or even a basic WebService to query what games are available and find their GOG store link... Come on GOG, this is the basics of the basics of web business since the 90's!
This would be a great idea that complements the principles behind DRM-Free gaming nicely! Would love to see it happem!
This is a brilliant idea. In providing an open API and facilitating alternate open source community launchers and projects, apart from being appreciated by the community this would increase GOG's reputation as a more open and community-orientated alternative to the major DRM-selling stores. It would also only further encourage people who care about such things to consider GOG as their primary games store, and could only increase sales for GOG.
I'd of course prefer to see the full Galaxy client open sourced, but if GOG do not decide to do that I really hope they'll consider providing an open API instead.
Jup, I've been toying with the idea of my own gog.com repo for my arch machines. This would make it all a lot easier. :-)
So far I opened another request, but they can be merged: www.gog.com/wishlist/galaxy/publish_galaxy_protocol_specification
This should be moved now to the Galaxy tab.
@Destro from GOG said that they are going to document the protocol of the Galaxy client!
See the Q&A video at 49:40
www.gog.com/news/ask_us_anything_on_twitch
So let's hope GOG will mark this in progress soon.
Host that baby on github! :D
Upvoted because Documentation is always good =b
Yes please, this would really go hand in hand with open sourcing the client.
This would cost practically nothing, it's basically one of the jobs of GOG's community managers - there is already tons of community support around the downloader, so it's in the best interests of GOG's good will to keep the community abreast of any planned changes to new or existing protocols :)
Very good idea. A bit of competition will increase the quality of the service and that for free. It should be in GOGs own interest to do so.
