I'm on mission 18 and I can't seem to get any Dark Angels or Black Knights. I have the requisite 5x5 Temple and an even larger Combat Pit. Got two portals and I've thrown creatures out to make sure there's capacity.

Is this a bug with version 1.7?
I have done some research and found that it is a bug with version 1.7

I have come up with a solution to the issue, the problem lies in the campaign map files which causes the Dark Angels, Dark Knights, Goblins, Rogues and Fireflies to simply not spawn.

PLEASE NOTE: This fix causes your saved games to NO LONGER work, so you will have to start at the begining of whatever campaign map you are up to. (at least this was the case for me, i was on the last level when i applied this fix and had to start at the begining of the last level again as my saves simply crashed when trying to load them up)

What you will need before you begin:

Download the Dungeon Keeper 2 installer from GOG.com again as this fix requires the game to be re-installed again.

Please backup your Dungeon Keeper 2 folder before we begin so that if problems do occur, you can run the installer again (to reset the registry changes made by the unofficial patch) and then copy your original folder of dungeon keeper 2 back.

1. Download the Dungeon Keeper 2 Unofficial Patch 1.73 (PLEASE NOTE: I did not create this or have any affiliation with those who did)
http://keeperklan.com/downloads.php?do=file&id=15

2. For some reason when you download it, it downloads as DKII_173.exe.htm. Rename DKII_173.exe.htm to DKII_173.exe and the installer will open.

3. PLEASE NOTE: do NOT extract the installer to your dungeon keeper 2 folder as we only want the map files.

4. Run the installer and place it into a temporary directory on your desktop or wherever you would like.

5. The installer makes quite a few registry changes (which causes the game to not run anymore) and is easier to re-install the GOG.com version of Dungeon Keeper 2 (which changes these settings back) than it is to list all the keys it changes. so go ahead and re-install the GOG.com version of Dungeon Keeper 2.

6. Now we are going to go back to that folder that the unofficial patch made (The one we saved in a temporary location). Open up the folder the unofficial installer created and you will see a folder called data (this is the one we want as it contains the fixed campaign map folders)

7. Copy the entire data folder to where Dungeon Keeper 2 is installed (by default it is installed at C:\Program Files (x86)\GOGcom\Dungeon Keeper 2) and tell it to override the files.

8. Open up Dungeon Keeper 2 to make sure that you can click on continue campaign and start off at the last level you were on.

I have only tested this fix for the last level, but the unofficial patch indicates that it fixes it for all levels.

Absolute wizard. FIxed my issue of 11 mistresses, 7 salamanders and 8 warlocks on the last level! Now I have a much more balanced amount of creatures. I should point out that you have to use cmd prompt to rename the file (simple google search will tell you how to rename properly - if not comment and I will help out). Thanks!

SNIP
For a simpler way, without changing the registry, the fixed map files are here
Also, GOG should please sticky this regularly arising topic or move the fixed files to the game content :)

For those who don't know where the fixed map files that Shaddim posted goes into;
it goes into gog.com\dungeon keeper 2\Data\Editor\Maps. (wherever you have installed the game. default is c:\program files)

Hmm a google search landed me here. Recently got DK2 from GOG.com and I sorta have the same problem. I can't seem to attract dark angels either. However the odd thing is, I attract more then enough firefly goblins and dark knights... and maidens?! Does the same solution still apply? I don't really mind having maidens instead of dark angels though, they are pretty strong to :p Only for the final my pet dungeon it awards bonus points if you attract dark angels.
Yeah I'm curious about that too. I'm about 11 levels in the game, and if there are problems in the later levels, then I gotta wonder if I want to keep playing to the end.

I've had plenty of goblins in the earlier levels, and I've seen maybe a couple of flies and rogues too, but curiously I haven't had any of those in the past few levels...
I am on the level where you fight nemesis and his sons.

have 5x6 temple, no dark angels.
have massive combat pit, no black knights (and I built it very early just so I could get them).

not sure why this is since I got black knights on the level before just fine.

also, rarely ever get fireflies. not that i miss them.

I just barely downloaed this last week, do i need to patch with the unofficial maps?
I'm playing with the patch 1.51 ( took me some time to find it, i had to find the 1.30 to 1.50 then 1.50 to 1.51, The patch attracts all creatures like it should, and the IA isn't bugged either ( in all version after the 1.51 the AI barely does anything)

yeah, indeed. See also here

Everyone should file a support ticket to gog, as they fix only problems with enough "impact" which they guess by the number of tickets... ;P

Hello.

I'm having this exact same issue. It won't spawn any of the creatures you mention. I've downloaded a number of 1.73 patches and replaced my maps with the files, even your levels patch you mentioned in another thread Shaddim, but it doesn't seem to make any difference. The game runs exactly the same, still not allowing me to attract the creatures.

I thought this would be my answer, but I cannot remove the .htm extension of the file. it reads as a .exe file, and nothing else. when I look in it's properties it says it's a HTM file, but that extension doesn't appear in the name, so i cannot remove the extension. When i open it in firefox it just comes up as a load of mind boggling symbols and such.

I've been searching for a fix for the past 2 hours now, and would really appreciate any help.

EDIT: I'm not sure what happened, but as I continued to play, a Dark Angel spawned in my dungeon. I can only assume the issue has been fixed, but with everything I tried I think it's impossible to say what fixed it. I'm just thankful it resolved itself.

Bump, because this map fix should be a sticky :3
I felt silly fighting Nemesis with warlocks, salamanders and dark elves instead of Black Knights and Dark Angels.

Confirming that this fix works and does not (to my knowledge / in my experience) introduce any further issues. I completed the game with these files in place and had a wonderful time.

That's because by default Windows hides the extensions of files with "known" extensions. You have to disable that in the Explorer => Tools => Folder Options => Display => Files and Folders => "Hide extensions of files whose type is known".
There is a way of fixing this problem without a patch. I have created a step-by-step guide to fix it.
