I downloaded and applied this patch - essentially it's a replacement DKII.exe that is supposed to give you unlimited zoom-out. It doesn't do anything - game runs exactly as before, no apparent instability, but there is no extra zoom-out. I'm running under win8 with a quadcore processor.

Is there some other step I need to take to enable the mod?

I tested the one from Keeperklan (http://keeperklan.com/threads/1051-Unlimited-Zoom-Out-aka-Supreme-Keeper-)?p=42739&viewfull=1#post42739) and it worked for me.
Do you really exchanged the executable or put it into the right folder? Rename the original one (e.g. DKII-dx.bak) copy the new one into the same folder and start the patched excutable directly not the game link.

I confirm that the Unlimited Zoom DKII-DX.exe doesn't do anything extra for mee, too. I did put it in the right folder (of course, or I wouldn't be able to play it), and I also set compatibility to Windows 98/ME. Still, it only zooms out the normal distance.
Does anyone here play multiplayer? Gameranger: DM Phoenix. V1.7. Hit me up. online almost 24/7

OK it tested it again with the new 2.0 installer, works fine.

Here step by step what to do:
1. rename in your DKII installation the file DKII.exe in DKII.bak and DKII-DX.exe in DKII.bak
2. download the DKII (Supreme Keeper & GOG enabled).rar archive
3. open the archive with winrar or something else (or decompress it somewhere temporary)
4. select the appropriate exe. Vanilla gog is 1.7. If you feel more experimental use the 1.73 or 1.8 experimental patch versions (are compatible with the gog install). I choose from the subfolder DKII v1.7\DKII 1.7 Zoom_DX (GOG version) the DKII_dx.exe executable & copy it over to the gog DKII installation.
5. double click the exe... DKII should start. Enjoy the unlimited zoom. (see screenshot http://i.imgur.com/m3K2kLW.png)

(PS: maybe the reason of the problem reports were that the executable in the archive is named "DKII_dx.exe" and not "DKII-dx.exe". Rename it to DKII-dx.exe if you want to use the installed shortcuts!
PPS: strangely, I had to fix the games shortcut from the startmenu manually... was directing to the renamed old executable. After redirecting to the new one the shortcut worked too)

That DID it! Man, you are a genius! I had tried everything above beforehand, and nothing had worked. Even starting the DKII_dx.exe had not helped. However, renaming it to DKII-dx.exe did the trick. Thanks to that (and to you) I can now enjoy unlimited zoom! :-)

or easier, change the configuration (found by Durandall):

Looks like you can change the min and max zoom levels in Data/editor/GlobalVariables.kwd.

DKII 1.51 - Data/editor/GlobalVariables.kwd
Min Zoom Level Offset - 0x2924
Max Zoom Level Offset - 0x2928
Min Zoom Level Default Value - 0x00400000
Max Zoom Level Default Value - 0x00D00000

Array of bytes search to locate values in other DKII versions - 0040000000D000000020000000200000002000002600000000 000000DC .
You can probably just use the first search results for 0040000000D00000 as well.
Is there currently a working patch available to get increased/unlimited zoom with GOGs current version 1.7? Most of the links seem to be dead now and the file hosted on https://keeperklan.com/downloads.php?do=file&id=86 only includes a DKII.exe, but GOGs current version requires a DKII-DX.exe.

Does not work for me, I seem to have a different version of GlobalVariables.kwd.
DKII GOG 2.0.0.32 - Data/editor/GlobalVariables.kwd
Max zoom in offset - 0x2834
Max zoom out offset - 0x2838
Max zoom in default value - 0x00400000 (16384)
Max zoom out default value - 0x00D00000 (53248)
Max zoom in new value - 0x401F0000 (8000)
Max zoom out new value - 0xF0490200 (150000)

That worked. Thanks a lot!
why do all the files for this keep getting deleted? :\
