I think I got it working now, I was able to run a mission without crashing.
I have an Nvidia 260GTX card, and when I first started the game all I got was a black screen.

After reading this forum post about enabling D3D mode http://www.gog.com/en/forum/dungeon_keeper/after_bullfrog_logo_black_screen_and_nothing_more/post4 I was still experiencing a crash whenever I reviewed the objectives in 1024x768-mode.
I thought to my self "there HAS to be a way to run this at a higher resolution..."

And lo and behold! There is.

What I did was the following (in addition to the tweak described in the link):

1) Navigated with the registry editor to HKEY_CURRENT_USER -> Software -> Bullfrog Productions Ltd -> Dungeon Keeper II -> Configuration->Video

2) Changed the "Screen Height" to my monitor's native resolution (1050)

3) Changed the "Screen Width" to my monitor's native resolution (1680)

4) Enjoyed DK2 in glorious Hi-Res :D

There is a side-effect though. I can't seem to see the objective, or it goes off the screen somehow. But it is not a real issue, is it? ;)

The game seems more stable too for some reason. I think it might have something to do with the difference between Windows and game resolution.

Many thanks to KingOfDust for his advice on the regedit tip.

Heyyo,

Another thing to do is mess with the Sound settings. I can't remember which it was.. I think disabling EAX or hardware sound also improved stability... check into it!

I'm gonna redownload this version of Dungeon Keeper 2 and check over it as well and make sure it's got the mappacks and all that and if not I'll link them.

I have win7 64bit with an Nvidia GTX260 video and integrated sound.
I am running 800x600 and the game is very enjoyable and reliable at that resolution. However I would prefer if GOG could get the game working reliably in 1024x768
