Ahoy,
Are there any storyline reasons or gameplay diffences that mean I should play DK1 first instead of going right to DK2? Thanks.
Not really. They are both stand alone titles. Game play and story are very similar.

Any thoughts on which is better? I played them both when they first come out, and really don't remember much.
2.

People will be nostalgic for 1, and the scripting of the levels is better, but as a game, DK2 is better than 1.
I have to agree that 2 is better. Also the cut scenes are amusing in 2.

2 has certainly aged a lot better than 1 and the overall game feels a little more polished in many places. However once you've got fully addicted with 2 give 1 a try, whilst its aged more you can get a good amount of fun out of the title.
Agreed there are some differences in the monsters you get, and though lacking the cut scenes, the narrator in the briefing and aftermath is amusing. A favorite of mine is his mentioning of the bunnies and their fate after you have conquered the realm.

Personally 1 is the best, it has aged well and you can win using too many different tactics. I have replayed that game more than 20 times by now, and I always come back for more. The only problem is that it´s too easy.

I´ve never liked too much the second one, although I agree it has some awesome vids.
I prefer 1 over 2, although 2 wasn't bad.
2 it's more complete, a more fine gameplay and better graphic. the First it's more sadic and cruel
One is by far the better game. I've also replayed it many times as KMetalMind has. The second game is kind of like the MoO3 of DK. It's not really the same game, as you lose alot of the best features from DK1.

I'm kind of interested in these games (played the first one when it was new, but can't remember much from it) and was wondering hwat exactly these lost features are when going from 1 to 2?
IMHO DK2 has a much better interface (and graphics, ofcourse), but the core gameplay feels better in DK1.
Dungeon Keeper 1 is still one of my favorites.

I have played 1 and 2 lots.

Multiplayer runs much faster on the second game though, for players that play with higher latency for online play.

There is a remake also that is very active @ http://warfortheoverworld.com.

Also a already playable fan expansion @ http://keeper.lubie.org/html/dk_keeperfx.php, but the multiplayer is very buggy at the moment with more than 2 players, and it can be played online by TCP/IP, and works well on Windows 7 when I tested.

One very odd thing about the Dungeon Keeper 2 engine which I don't think I liked much was that it's unbalanced fighting. If you attack from the south side all the time, you will always have the advantage in defeating your opponents, even with the same type of creatures vs. the others.
