I just purchased DK and DK 2. DK has an issue where the screen goes out of full screen sometimes.

DK 2 will not load at all, I click on it, and it flashes the screen then nothing happen. DK to is broken as far as I can tell with Windows 10.

Dungeon Keeper is a DOS game and runs via DOSBox, while Dungeon Keeper 2 is a native Windows game: that's why you are experiencing a different behaviour.

Speaking of DK2, try to run the game in compatibility mode.
Right click on the game's launcher, click on Properties and choose the Compatibility tab.
Set the compatibility mode to "Windows Xp" or "Windows 2000", click OK to apply and try to run the game.
Hi, I'd like to buy DKII but I am running Windows 10.
Is it worth buying and trying it out, or would I just end up trying to get a refund?

I really miss playing it, but don't want to buy it if it definitely won't work.

I recently bought DK and DK2. Both work fine on my system running windows 10. I'd recommend buying them since they are extremely fun. If you're super worried, though, consider buying them when on sale.
I ahve the exact same problem.
The game simply doesn't start. When I start it, safe mode or the actual game, it flat out crashes before I even get to see the Bullfrog logo.

Running on Windows 10, with a machine that runs Doom (2016) at High at a constant 60 FPS, so it seriously isn't my specs. You can run DK2 on a toaster nowadays.
Something that springs to mind, it asked if it could install something as I first tried running it. I clicked yes (Considering it was directx related if I recall) but I am unsure if that is the cause.
It does run on my old and cruddy Windows XP machine, but... eh.

Mine worked straight from installation with no issues. You will want to check compatibility first, see if it is in the correct compatibility mode (not at game computer but should be Windows XP. I'll check when at home)

I did some more looking into things.

I can run the NORMAL .exe fine.
It's when I run DK2 DX.exe where I start crashing.
Weird.

Just a quick thing to make sure of is that you have DirectPlay installed.

i had the same issues with these when i tried them on win 10 for the first time and it was because this is a deprecated and optional feature within windows (not installed by default).

You can install it via the Control Panel

For the control panel method go into Programs and Feature and clicking Turn windows features on and off. in there you'll find a section marked Legacy Components which when expanded will show DirectPlay as an available option. make sure this is checked and then click OK.

Windows will then go through the necessary actions to install the feature and once completed try loading the game again.
I checked, and Direct Play is already on.

So I can play the game, just... in "horrendous graphics mode, seriously, DK1 looks better".

I guess it beats nothing?
Hey guys, at first: Thx for the thread and the answers. On my Nvidia 970GTX Notebook the graphics are unplayable, but dkII is running now.

But this is not an gog-problem. I already purchased DKII as full in the 90s and played it for a long time. I got the CD of it in my basement and tried to install the game on my windows 10. The installation was easy but it doesnt run. Then i saw the action with gog and thought: "Maybe they found that bug inside". I failed.

Now DKII is running but there are shadows in front of the screen an they cover anything but a few elements. There is no fun in it. Does somebody know the reason for that coverage?

The graphics renderer breaks on modern Windows, and GOG got a deal with EA to fix it in their release. Retail users can apply the General Improvement Mod (GIM) and run the game through DKII_DX.exe to get that fix.

Are you running the game through DKII.exe (wrong) or DKII_DX.exe (correct)?

On my Windows 10 64bit the game didn't even start (windows gave an error) until I installed "Direct Play". GoG should display some sort of warning when someone installs this game. This is really a serious problem.

It's pretty much MS' fault for not distributing DirectX 9.0c in any Windows release by default.

I'm running win10 Pro and it wouldn't even launch. This worked like a charm, thanks!
