After buying DK2 today, after losing my old disk years ago, I downloaded the game and the patcher.

Installed the game, patcher wouldnt install, saying it was incompatible with the current version.

The game wont run at all without tweaking, I had to run it in compatibility mode to even get it to run, and even then its locked in the lowest resolution.

Registry hacking the screen width and height values does nothing, upon entering the game the values simply reset to 640x400

Ive tried restarting and reinstalling several times, and im now at a loss to what I should do.

Even back when the game first came out I could run it in a better resolution.

Im running windows 7 64x

All help appreiciated

I assume you downloaded the game recently so the patch is already applied in this version and therefore you don't need it anymore (it's for the others - some people downloaded the installer long time ago and do not wish to download it again - the patch is for them)

Are you running the safe mode or the standard one? Try the later with some compatibility (win 98 for example). Check in the options whether acceleration is a "fake device". Experiment a bit with options - you can switch the hardware acceleration off - software should work perfectly fine. And then try to switch the resolution.
The acceleration does show "fake device"

after turning hardware acceleration off, the resolution still refuses to change running on compatibility for 98

Try this:

Start -> run -> regedit

Follow this path:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Bullfrog Productions Ltd\Dungeon Keeper II\Configuration\Video

and find two options there: Screen Width and Screen Height. Double click them and change it to decimal mode. Put 1024 and 768, respectively. Try running the game
I already mentioned I tried regedit in the original post.

Changing to these specific values changes nothing

Sorry.

Did you try DK2 tweak tool?

The tweak cause instant crashes upon launching.

Ive tweaked pretty much every setting in the window, and tried various compatibility modes.

Thank you for your help so far, just hoping I can fix it

How about the safe mode? Did you try it as well? Does it launch? Can you change some settings?
Potentially newbie question here, how do I run it in safe mode?

You should have this shortcut in your gog.com folder. Start -> gog.com -> Dungeon Keeper 2 -> Dungeon Keeper 2 [Safe Mode]
Sadly it will not run AT ALL in safemode, regardless of compatibility mode

One last idea...

Open the registry and check the value of Res 1024*768 Enabled. If it is 0 change it to 1 andchange the screen width and height. Perhaps it will help... If not then I'm sorry I don't have any other idea at the moment (perhaps later)

Wait! One more question: where did you install the game? If in Program Files try a different folder and avoid system folders.
Thank you very much for your suggestions, I tried changing the reg values of those values already, and it didnt help.

Ill try reinstalling tomorrow.
Reinstalled in different area, and still no luck.

Redownloaded installer to make sure it wasnt corrupt, all with the same consequences

More questions: what's your video card and have you updated its drivers recently? If not please do so.
