I'm playing on a 4:3 CRT monitor and having a problem where the game displays the correct aspect ratio until I actually enter one of the levels, then it forces it into widescreen mode. It does this in both high res and low res mode. Is there a hotkey or DOSbox setting I can use to prevent this? Thanks

Hello,
Aspect ratio is almost always controlled by either the monitor or the program, you can set which one you wish. DK 2 should only have 4:3 and if you are seeing wide screen it is almost guaranteed that your monitor/card is forcing it do so.

Right click on your desktop and choose your graphics card control panel. Then under display where it says adjust desktop size and position. You can adjust scaling.

Well, like I said it does display in 4:3 when I open the game initially (this is DK1 btw), it's only when I actually enter one of the levels and start playing that it goes widescreen. It also didn't do this originally, it just started out of the blue like I accidentally hit a hotkey that changes the aspect ratio or something. Very strange.

It sounds like you are using a Mod for the game, are you?

Nope, no mods. If I run it in windowed mode, I can even see the size of the window change as soon as I enter a level.

Hello,
others have had this issue before.
Here are some proposed solutions to the same issue before.

ALT R might help while in game.

It seems like it's just intended that the gameplay and cinematics were designed to be slightly letterboxed on a 4:3 screen, while the main menu and level select screen were not. I was able to get it to fill up the screen by setting 'aspect' to 'true' in dosboxDK.conf, but this results in the image being obviously stretched during gameplay. If you look up videos of the game on Youtube, you can see that they all are either wider than 4:3, or are stretched vertically so that the mimimap is not actually a circle. Thanks for trying to help, though!

That's because the game runs at 320x200 or 640x400 (technically 16:10 aspect ratio), while the menu is at 640x480. Most developers took into account the fact that the pixels were not square with the former resolutions on 4:3 displays, but some developers missed it. I believe there is an Aspect ratio option somewhere in DosBox config files if you want full screen.
KeeperFX is the way to go here. It allows for any resolution you want, windowed or full screen.

THANKS! This is a great mod and does exactly what I'm looking for.
