I see that it allows DK1 to be run more easily on a modern OS and provides fixes. Is the overall experience pretty much the same as 'vanilla' Gold, but better?

Yes but no. I mean, it does life more easy, but the IA becomes harder. Or at least for me, some final levels were a slow peace to win the game due IA was an amazing enemy.

I-m saying this because the first time I played in vanilla mode and I didn-t remember having any problem. But, two years ago I played again with only that one, and ouuuch.

Many people who originally played DK, played it pre patch, where often the enemy AI was not functional. Later a patch was released, along with DK Gold but also available separately, that improved the enemy AI.
KeeperFX targets the difficulty of that patch, that I believe is also included in the GOG version of the game. While the KeeperFX AI has gotten many improvements, he is not set to full on the original campaign, and the levels get balanced to retain the original difficulty.
It could be that we failed at this at some point of course, but I think we're in a pretty good spot with matching the original game.

It was not a total unwinable scenario. But either I had to know very well each level design and objectives, or I had to exhaust the IA resources to have a chance to fight it. Particuarly at the latest levels.

Sadly, there were some years between the vanilla and patched runs, so I can't give a more detailed comparison .

Still, the patch is pretty amazing :)
If the most significant difference is the AI, I think I will try it with KeeperFX then. Thanks.
