Clean install from GOG Galaxy, crashes as soon as I start a new game. I've tried the run in Admin mode, Compatibility for Windows XP, no joy. Crashes in full screen or windowed at several different resolutions.

I have a 1440p variable refresh rate monitor, Radeon RX 7900 XT, Adrenaline 24.1.1 driver. Skyrim, Fallout 4, Fallout 76, and Starfield are all running fine.

Suggestions?
Try downgrading to 23.12.1, I had a similar problem with both FO3 and NV and that's what fixed it.
Honestly? Buy an Nvidia GPU.

It's an AMD driver issue. They always have issues. The fanboys will bite your head off and blame you for it, but it's the drivers.

This is why Nvidia gets to charge $200+ more for their GPUs,

FNV works for me but FO3 crashes, you can rollback to the 23 driver but then you lose other stability and new features from the 24 series.

Ultimately you have to decide, do you want to play any game you want whenever with stability, or only the games the driver lets you play with whatever driver issues there are with it on top of that.

On the plus side, 24.2 is very smooth for Skyrim, so there's that.
This is the first driver related issue I've had in a year (and even then it was really only in one game). When the alternative is AUD$500+ for an nVidia card (I only paid AUD$399 for the RX 6600 in the system that's giving me grief), I can live with that.

Tried it and it outperforms the AMD 24.2.1 driver. Sometimes the latest and flashiest ain't always the best.

My FO3 GOTY install died about the same time. Worked fine for months and then no-go. Crashes on load or crashes on start new game. :(

We need some support from GOG here - this game wasn't free, thanks.

Have you contacted support? Unfortunately GOG doesn't monitor the forums so won't see these threads.

GOG can't fix bad GPU drivers...

How do you downgrade a game?

Wait you mean the GPU driver, my fault

My niece wanted to play Fallout 3 for the first time but she couldn't get it working but she said New Vegas was working.

I had a look and Falout 3 would crash everytime she tried to start a new game but New Vegas would start just fine.

Her laptop doesn't have AMD, it's a mid range Intel CPU with integrated Intel graphics, i thought that Intel was the problem but nothing i did helped.

So i installed the Tale of Two Wastelands using the Best of Times instructions on the website, imported all the Fallout 3 assets into New Vegas.

It took ages cause her laptop has limited CPU power but after finishing all the instructions on the Best of Time website and installing the Benny Humbles you mod it's working perfectly.

I have an Nvidia card ( Geforce RTX 3060) and it loads the start page and won't go further than that. It isnt the graphics card. I've updated it, I've optimised it for Fallout 3 and still zeroes!
I have tried to follow the utubes to fix it but they are all for Win10 and I have the Win11 64
I thought it was the Steam game so I refunded and paid a tad extra for the GOG version and no change.
I first played this game on disc and had zero issues but I'm a tad lost at the moment
Try NVAC New Vegas Anti Crash from Nexus. Could work on F3, works fine on FNV (an on Oblivion and Skyrim). On reddit are posts that it's very effective on F3.

You have to mod the games to run, the AMD driver issue is after you've already got it running on modern systems.

There should be a guide somewhere to set FO3 up, try searching vivanewvegas or dragonsbornfate and they should have an FO3 link. It is tricky I know, I've been playing and modding these games since they came out, so 16 years now. I'll try to give you a very quick list. I have a personal guide but it probably won't make sense and I'm not sure anyone would care exactly what I do.

First you need a nexusmods account, it's free. You should also use a mod manager, either use Vortex which is integrated in nexusmods (they might change this to nexusapp soon but I think it's still Vortex now) or Mod Organizer 2 (MO2). Run FO3 once, even if it crashes it's fine, install the mod manager and set it up.

For mods the easiest start is the Updated Unofficial Fallout 3 Patch mod. It should have instructions to follow, and that will get you pretty much most of the way through, as he's pretty active and it's a few modders that look through it. Off the top of my head it will tell you to use the BSA decompresser, NVAC, Anniversary patcher. Get all the mods and items it tells you to. I would suggest converting to WAV but there's some dispute on that right now and you don't have to worry about it, just follow what you can on there.

I don't check here too much but I hope that gets you started and helps. I'm a really big fan of this game, these games in general honestly, and I always want more people to be able to enjoy them. Good luck and have fun! I'll try and check up and help out here if I can but honestly you can ask on nexus, there's a discord server too that's pretty nice. I'm not in there atm but I'm sure it's still cool, it's a good group, feel free to ask for help in the proper channels and usually someone will try to help.
