The game keeps freezing with the 1.08 patch window pop up, why won't the game launch? I had a steam version but got the gog version and I knew it would cause issues so I deleted the Steam version first had uninstalled the 1.08 patch and the system pack patch I had for it as well but my Gog version still won't work. Is there some other hidden Gothic folder from Steam I don't know about? I might just have to stick with the Steam version for my computer and use gog when I play on my laptop. I checked the steam forum and apparently the steam version has patches now pre-installed with the game so maybe there's some hidden file from it that causes the issue with Gog's version.

Exactly the same thing is happening with mine and it is both games. Tried adding the exe files to D.E.P and also various compatibility options but just getting a black screen with a window. First game has the window with the patch version and second game is blank across the top of the window.

Trying to run on Windows 10 64Bit

Going to test the Steam version of Gothic 2 to see what happens next
This video helped me to run Gothic 2 Gold edition,

go to youtube and search for "IT WORKS! Gothic 2 Install Guide for Dummies | Windows 10 | Step by Step Walkthrough" by LiliaTV. (I am unable to post the link for some reason)

I am not the owner of the video or have ANY kind of connection to or have any kind benefits from that channel, this is simply what worked for me after long trials with Gothic 2

Hi. I've fixed this by downloading the Player Kit - v1.08k from World of Gothic.

Just download it and run the installer. When prompted, enter the path where you installed Gothic 1.

Hope it helps.

All this did for me was replace the 1.08 patch window pop up with a 1.08k_mod popup and the same thing happens

EDIT: I got it working vanilla (no community patches) by NOT installing in the suggested directory, i.e Program Files (86).

Is this not tested before GOG publishes games?

Here is what worked for me (Win11):
- I installed Gothic 1 player kit 1.08k and its 2.8 update
- Installed Gothic 1 system pack
- Ran verify/repair from GOG app
- Run game from GothicMod.exe found in \gothic\system folder

Notes:
I also installed directx9 from:
https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/download/details.aspx?id=8109

If you keep GOG app running in the background, it would sync save files in clound as normal

Thank you! Verifying the files after installing the other things was the missing step I needed!

Under what directory did you install it? I had to install it in my user-directory and not in the suggested default location (which was "C:\Program Files (86)\
Hi all!
I've struggled for several weeks to launch Gothic (GOG) on my i7 11800, GF 3060 notebook.
Here is my path to success:

1. Set up Gothic GoG edition.
2. Install PlayerKit 1.08
3. Install PlayerKit 2.8
4. Install Gothic 1 SystemPack (note that SystemPack is meant to be installed over PlayerKits)
5. Install GD3D11: Gothic 1/2 Direct X renderer. After this step, the Gothic mod launcher will display the game version as 1.0, which is actually a version of DX renderer.

PS
I was not able to start the game without a DX renderer. Also, while I was tinkering with the game, I turned off Windows DEP and turned on compatibility mode (XP SP3).
Right now, the easiest solution is to just install the Union mod, which is a continuation of the old method with the PlayerKit and SystemPack. That method used to work for me, but after I did a Windows update, had to switch to Union. Works flawlessly with it.
