I cannot get MM9 to open at all on my computer. Hitting the "play" button in Galaxy, selecting "launch" in the game's launcher, or straight up opening lithtech.exe all create a small black box in the center of my screen that disappears after a second or two, and nothing else - no error message or anything.

I've tried setting both mm9.exe and lithtech.exe to run as administrator and tried all the various compatibility modes; nothing changes. I've installed all the recommended patches and fixes as well. Changing the resolution doesn't do anything, either.

Is there something I'm missing? I know the game is buggy as all get out, but it seems like most people are able to actually get it running at least.

You've overlooked running dxcfg.exe (found in the game's root directory)--you need to set those options for your system--Hint: this game only runs at 640x480--so set Display Mode to Set application by default, and Presentation to Fullscreen. That should get you started.

I'd played around with it a bit but wasn't sure what to set it to. That said, I've just updated it per your suggestions and it's still failing to launch. Is there something else I need to tweak, or could Nvidia be doing something funky that's overriding it?

What are your settings for dxcfg.exe?
What are your settings for dxcfg.exe?
Display mode: Set by application (Default)
Presentation: Fullscreen
Aspect ratio correction: Enabled (Default)
Scaling method: Screen fit (Default)
Vertical synchronization: Set by application (Default)
Gamma correction: 1.0 (Default)

Anistropic filtering: Set by application (Default)
Antialiasing: Set by application (Default)

I've also tried setting the display mode to various resolutions (640x480, 1024x768, and my native resolution of 1920x1080), both with and without also changing my monitor resolution.
Same problem here. It wont launch at all. Any solutions?
Same issue wont launch, tried the above mentioned solution but still nothing happens.
Me too
Same problem... any solution? (The game work on my computer with ATI graphic card but don't work on my netbook intel HD 505 graphic card)

Are you using laptops with external monitors? If so, then disconnect it and see if it boots on your laptop screen.
Try Display Mode: Desktop resolution and/or switch to windowed mode

Desktop resolution use to see more stable if your computers have problems with old res or depending the scale method in your card. I have noticed as well that with that wrapper playing with the vsync on/off is worth the try. Dependng if you have some kind of vsync enabled into your graphic card configuration programs.
The Gog Version is updated for Windows 10, don't mess around with any options or resolutions or DX datas.

If it doesn't start I would suggest to make a clean reinstall or use repair option of the galaxy client. If it still doesn't work try the standalone version without the client.

If it still doesn't work close all non essential background programs (including 3rd party anti virus). Some old games collide with those programs, Gothic for example doesn't start with my Logitech software running.

If it still doesn't work post your system specs, so that maybe there can be found something all of you have in common.

Since Gog updatet the game for Win10 it works just fine with me, without messing around with any data or settings. Specs: Intel Core I5 3570K, NVidia GTX 1060 6GB, 16GB DDR3, installed on a HDD.

There is a dxwrapper inside the game folder plus the configurator that makes the game compatble with windows 10. That is what is configured if needed.
Same problem, only thing that shows on screen is a 2 x 3 inch black box for about 6 seconds, then nothing. Appears to be nothing else from the program going on in background. Have tried most of suggestions on this page, re-installed with offline file twice, used repair through Galaxy option, tried many options in the dxcfg.exe file, tried different compatibility options (XP pack 2, XP pack 3) with both the mm9.exe and Launch Might and Magic 9 - Writ of Fate files, tried launching with and without Galaxy, tried launching from the box which pops up if you double click the mm9.exe, tried adjusting the options in that box ( the pop-up box which has the options of Launch, Display, Advanced, and 3D Sound.)

Well, that's kind of wall-o-texty, but the point is I didn't just try one thing and give up (no, I don't want a medal). Anyway, each try produced the small black box for a few seconds and nothing else.

Hardware and software are : GPU - RTX 2060 driver 451.48 / OS - Windows 10 Home version 1909 os build 18363.900 / CPU - Ryzen 2600

It's really not a big deal because I paid $1.50 for this in particular and GOG puts in a lot of work for compatibility overall, so I am not posting to complain, only reporting my experience.

Hi, just wondering - sorry if I have missed something you've said already - but are you certain that the game actually uses the Nvidia GPU? I am asking because I have a laptop on which the game first prefer the intel GPU chip, which doesn't work very well. However, using the Nvidia control panel I can force the game to use the Nvidia GPU. But I have to set this manually.
