I hate to be the first one who brings up some problems with these wonderful games, but here goes...
In Might & Magic 4, the mouse pointer sometimes disappears, making it harder to navigate the menus. This seems to happen only in the main party status screen, don't know if it occurs in other places as well.
Any suggestions?
Forgive me, I don't think I've bought DOS games from GOG before - do these launch in their own emulators or do you run them in a conventional DOSBox? I have been playing M&M 4+5 in DOSBox since they screwed up GameTap (which emulated smoothly) and have always had a flickering mouse, though never an invisible one. If you can run this in your own emulator, changing the clock speed might help, as it does with the flickering.
Assuming not, I would like to know does the mouse flicker much the rest of the time? I am interested in getting this package for the games I don't have or which emulate poorly, but if I could actually play Xeen smoothly (sound glitches are also a concern) that would be an easier decision.
I'm not sure if this is in the manual, but in case you don't know, 4 can be played without a mouse. Every single thing in the game can be done on the keyboard. (This might be true of the others as well but I haven't played them.)
(Edit: In case it sounds like I pirated Xeen, I do own this collection on disc.)

I had this problem in Dosbox when I played through Xeen a few months ago. Try boosting your CPU cycles (ctrl-F12, I think, assuming all the standard Dosbox commands work in GOG's version). That fixed it for me, and it did not affect the speed of the game.

I couldn't help myself and sprang for it anyway, so answering my own question:
The World of Xeen in this package runs more smoothly for me than either of the other versions I've used. The mouse pointer barely flickers at all. Sound is still a tiny bit glitchy, but less than I'm used to and not enough to bother me. (For all I know that's how it was in DOS.)
What really makes this worth the purchase is the voices and sound effects aren't all out of balance! It used to be I would literally turn down the volume on my speakers whenever I needed to talk to an NPC, and some of the fighting sounds were always too loud. I don't know how they did it, but the game is now much easier on the ears. To whomever is responsible, thank you.
One disappointment that probably won't affect many others: It's rejecting my old savegames. I wouldn't mind starting over, but I already did that once after GameTap committed suicide this last May and (among other crimes) erased my data files without asking or using the recycle bin. I'm afraid playing through the first half of this game three times in the space of a year will make the whole thing feel like a chore. Can anyone help with this? (The save files, that is - not my fragile psychological state.)

I happened to still have Xeen installed, so I just tried this. I was able to copy my saves over and load them with no trouble. You need to copy both the XEEN**.SAV and DARK**.SAV files. What problem are you having?

Thank you so much.
My mistake was making a new save in the old install, noting the filename, and then copying only that file. Looking more closely after the first failed attempt, I noticed the two different sets of files, but only one of them (DARK01.SAV) had been modified today. So I got it in my head that the XEEN series was left over from an attempt to recover my GameTap endeavor or something previous. I tried it a couple other ways but for some reason didn't think to copy everything.
tl;dr I have rocks in my head. You have saved me a lot of grief!

I had the same problem last year when I was playing my old copies. There are several temporary quick fixes which all may/may not work.
1. jerk the mouse around for a second or two until you see the cursor.
2. exit the starts screen and re-enter it.
3. hold down the left click button for a second.
4. Just live with it. There are hot keys for every single action in the stats & inventory screen.
This is just the normal behavior of the game...
Actually this happens when you have DOSBox CPU cycles high.. If you lower the cycles enough for it not to happen, then the game runs too slowly...
It did the same thing on fast computers back when the game came out (I ran it on a Pentium 90 and had this issue), but it didn't happen on a 486/33, however the rest of the game ran sluggishly.
Try to set your CPU cycles where it will vanish on just the top half of the screen in the status screen, it shouldn't disappear anywhere else.
The odd thing about this issue that I never understood is that Might and Magic III never had that problem.. Something they changed in the engine between III and WoX caused it.

I know this post is old but for those having mouse problems with Xeen, change the cycles in DOSbox to 30000, from 20000. It fixed the cursor problem for me. It may vary for different PC's depending on your clock speed. So experiment, but the cycles fixed variable is what you need to adjust apparently.

I'm typing a reply about 5 years after this post, but I recently started playing Worlds of Xeen and just wanted to say that changing the CPU cycles to 30000 totally works and doesn't seem to alter gameplay at all. Thanks for the advice!

I also wanted to add that if you want to keep it permanently at 30000 and not have to always hit Ctrl+F12 about 10 times each game session...

1. Go to your Might & Magic 4-5 directory (usually something like "C:\GOG Games\Might and Magic 4-5")
2. Open the file "dosboxMM4-5.conf" in Notepad
3. Find the line "cycles=fixed 20000" and change it to 30000

That way you should permanently fix the mouse cursor issue.
This should be sticky :-) Thank you very much.

That work's well

Thank you !
Fixed it for me as well.

I also want to add that on top of fixing the mouse it also made the game itself feel much smother and better to play.

Years later and this post is still helping people. I just fixed this issue myself following your instructions. Thanks!
I'm glad that a solution has been posted, but for information purposes I would like to point out that all MM up to 5 can be played with just the keyboard.
