Currently used version is somewhat disappointing and (somewhat) buggy. Yesterday I was really unhappy to discover that first secret level has no end (looks like some bug in scripting) -- after you drag through all these (very hard) battles and traps in FPS mode and finally reach destination, it gives you nothing when you press space, it does not even mark this level as complete -- you can run it again, if you want! Just a waste of time and transferred knight.

Missing expansion pack (deeper dungeons) is a sad thing too...
Totally agree with you. Thought that the GOG version is the best version available of Dungeon Keeper 1.
er... thats the whole point of the secret level, you get a bonus creature for the next level, and can redo it however many times you want. The level is set to end only when the timer runs out, the transferred creature is the reward.


The windows and dos versions were identical in all respects.

There was the direct3d version though, which removed all lense effects/lighting changes from spells, to add antialiasing. To achieve a better version of that use the advanced options in the graphic setup from the install directory.

In complete agreement over the lack of deeper dungeons ( although the do include all the level files in the game.gog file :(
The Gold Edition contains the patch 1.1 and there are all effects and higher resolution, more fluent gameplay and the interface and the icons look much better.

you use alt + r to switchresolutions in game
it also contains the deeper dungeon levels in game.gog it is just missing the exe file

But if it's missing the .exe file, doesn't that make the Deeper Dungeons levels unplayable? And if you can't play them, in effect, you don't have them. >.>
Confused..had this game years ago---I am reading that it DOES NOT contain the deeper dungeons AND that if you get hold of the deeper dungeon it will not work on GOG.com.
Also confused about the graphics...Read on review page that this is dos version so graphics not as good???

That is the problem that you don't... There is a Lvl10 vampire at the end, but no way to transfer him (not mentioning extremely hard final battle. I've seen fan-made patches on internet that were fixing this (and other bugs), but that patch did not work with GOG version of DK1. :-\

I already have both games on CDs and I planned to also get a GoG license, just in case my CDs no longer work or if I wanted to install it when I'm away from home.

If GoG only delivers the DOS version and not the Deeper Dungeon, there's no point in buying it on GoG :/

If you're unwilling to play in DOS or without Deeper Dungeons, that's certainly your choice, but I'm pretty sure once GOG gets the EA expansions they won't charge extra for those who already purchased the game (or if they do, it will only be like a few bucks for everybody, but I really can't imagine them agreeing to that).

If you really want to play, there's a sale going on right now; 3 bucks isn't a lot of money. (Maybe you can justify it by saying, "Okay, Dungeon Keeper + expansion = 6 bucks, so DK by itself should equal 3 or 4 bucks; that's what I'm paying...")
so now that the expansion is added, is there any difference between the dos version and Windows version? Is one of them superior to the other?
The Windows Version (With the patch applied, Gold Edition already has the patch applied) features enemy Dungeon Keeper AI that actually knows how to build rooms properly and as such can actually attract monsters, making them an actual challenge instead of complete push overs. Your AI Assistant that you can toggle on/off and configure will also now build rooms properly. In the DOS version these 2 features remained broken, the patch didn't fix these problems for the DOS version :/

Without the patch the Windows version was just as bad as the DOS version.

At least that was how it was when I played 13~ years ago and was still running Windows 98 or ME (My family has never had an issue with ME, no need to moan about it being the worst thing ever. It's equally stable as Windows 98se and features several GUI improvements that made life a fair bit less tedious).

I'm also somewhat disappointed no one has taken it upon themselves to make/hack the Windows Version more compatible with new versions of Windows (Very crash prone under Windows XP and newer) and an option to force stretching to 4:3 (640x480) instead of 640x400 or whatever resolution it used in High Resolution mode. (I'm both thankful and surprised that someone went to the effort of porting Raptor: Call Of The Shadows though)

Edit: VMWare Workstation and a virtual Windows 98, Windows 98se or Windows ME environment work reasonably well for playing the Windows version of the game, though VMWare Workstation is both not free and not cheap.

When I played years ago I had a CRT display and could simply twiddle a dial to stretch the image which was rad, now I have an LCD display and to my dismay these displays tend to require software to accomplish the same thing and the software isn't always compatible with games etc. :/

That's not entirely true. There were 3 patches for dungeon keeper.
The first improved the computer ai. This one worked on both the dos and windows versions.

The second one was windows only, and added d3d support. This was a very strong anti-aliasing effect applied to everything at the expense of all creature possession effects (i.e. vampires lost their red vision, flies the segmented eyes) and some spell effects (i.e. lightning no longer cased the screen to switch to a b;ue/white palette momentarily.)

Then there was a third one that was for windows only, which fixed an ipx network configuration problem for win98.


No patch added any gui improvements

Oh yeah, I forgot about those 2 additional patches, they are optional though and I didn't like losing various visuals when using Direct3D which is why I didn't remember them. I do still remember testing the first patch out and finding no AI impact on the DOS version and a remarkable difference on the Windows version. (The patch was included on my Dungeon Keeper disc as a separate install)

Anyways, another reason to include the Windows version is that it can run without DOS, duh, and can be operated within a 64bit O/S without the aid of sluggish/taxing emulation. (I am aware the game doesn't run great on Windows above Windows ME, but it's still got a chance of working well depending on the computer hardware used. It works fairly well under Windows XP albeit with an intermittent crash issue)

Haven't tested it much if at all under Windows 7 (Current O/S) though.

Lastly, some people DO have legacy computers lying around with old operating systems specifically for playing old games, the lack of the Windows version is a damn shame for said users as they still have to scour the internet to find it.

Is the AI really that bad in the DOS version? If it really was, then how did this become popular in the first place? Or did nobody give a damn about Dungeon Keeper until the "fixed" Windows version was available?
