they give you that stuff but if you find someone willing to buy you something for cards, they CAN get you a free game (OFC card value must = game value)

In my opinion is just another excuse to make more money (market) and let's be honest, probably people will buy certain games only because of the trading cards.

edit:
Exactly as Pheace said, some will value collecting the cards others just won't try to bother and sell them for some steam wallet credit.

In the end it's up to the user to decide what to do.

And yes, you can sell cards in the market.
I'm glad there are some more people thinking like this. I just read some stuff about trading cards and thought to myself "what a load of crap"... But then again, they won't do any harm, except for possibly being addictive. And I remember being somewhat more interested in "achievement stuff" in the past, although this still seems a bit overdone to me.

...why is Isaac not dropping any cards or recording any time for me?

During the opening sequence, my profile turns back to blue and doesn't show me being in game.

I had problems with the game giving achievements until I used The BOIL.
It's a fan made launcher for Isaac that lets you turn off the DLC. I found it on the steam forums awhile back, it may help you out. I have had better performance, and have gotten all my card drops while using it.

Ahh, I have the DLC, just have it turned off. I hope somebody can help you out or can confirm if you need the DLC.

It also happened to me when I reinstalled the game just for the trading cards. What fixed it was deleting my save game - the so.sol file located here:

%appdata%\Macromedia\Flash Player\#SharedObjects\<some random string>\localhost\
