I picked the abysmal Dungeon Keeper Mobile fiasco as a reason to download one
of my favourite games of all time ported to modern OS (in my case windows 8)...

i must say im frankly disappointed with the port which claims full compatiblity
with windows 7 and 8 on the store description.

A) it crashes instantly on Intel hd 4000 when entering the options menu
B) it runs on Nvidia but only in 4:3 at 1024x768 max

I do some research on the issue and find out that there are more issues like certain
minions not spawning in 1.7 and that i may need to download a FANpaTCH from a godawfully
slow adware infested site called softpedia which is 200mb of size (wtf thats 50% of the size
of the entire game) and that i need to apply more fixes after that like some .dll and/or exe to be able to zoom out?

(and why does GOG not incorporate these fixes as 1.7 is dated 2012 and we write AD 2014 now?)

Can someone compile for me what do i need to do to get the most out of this game at
its current GOG release state is 1.7 because now im totally confused with overlaping information,
preferedly with download links of fast mirrors)

I believe this might be some help to people who come here anew, spiked by the current sh1tstorm
about EAs recent rape of our most beloved game heritage.

1. Can't help with crash as it works fine for me, sorry.
2. 1024x768 is max resolution the game has so... yeah, you can run it at 1024x768 max as aynone else can. As noted above you can get some higher ones with broken UI by fiddling with some options outside of game, but they are not officially supported by the game os it is not surprising they work badly and need more work to get as the game is not supposed to be run with them.
3. What minions are supposed to not be spawning? I just tried match in skirmish and I was able to get every single spawnable unit. The game also ran smoothly and I was able to zoom just fine.
OK, I googled the patch and found this changelog madeby author of said patch and it doesn't seem like it changes anything important. Basically anything listed there should be either fixed in GOG version or is not essential stuff (2 more maps made available for skirmish).
Anyway, if you want that patch you can also find it at patches-scrolls.de. That's reliable site for patches and should contain no adaware. ;-)

sabrehawk: ported to modern OS
I think there might be some misconception here: GOG is just a retailer, they don't port games, they don't even have access to the source code. What they do however is making games compatible; many old games require tweaks and fixes because or rendering glitches or similar problems, and GOG does that part. It is still the same game as all those years ago, so any problem that the game itself has will still be present. You still get the same game, minus OS compatibility problems.

If you have problems running the game you should contact support, but if the game has bugs, well that's a problem it has had since forever. Fan patches are not applied by GOG for legal reasons and because it would break the authenticity of the product (unless the patch is needed for compatibility).
Damn, I bought the GoG version specifically because I thought the graphics fix would work for me, but it still crashes every 10-20 minutes. Any ideas?

Windows 7 64 bit, i5 2500k, ATI 7950 with newest 14.1 beta drivers

Runs fine until it just crashes to desktop :/

The only officially supported maximum resolution is 1024x768. If you're using Timeslip's latest patch from the previous page, you can unlock higher resolutions by editing the graphics config.ini to include HighRes=1

Here is my config file in case it helps http://www.mediafire.com/download/l2v9uehi9wi4jrr/GOG.7z
The config file is located in c:\Users\YourName\AppData\Roaming\GOG\DungeonKeeper2\ My one has antialiasing and anisotropy enabled.

Make sure you load the game using only DKII-DX.exe otherwise the patch will not work.

thanks but yet again this is fragmented information.

I want to run
HW ACELL
working 1920x1080 fullscreen 16:9 resolution
1.8 patch (i grabbed it of softpedia now)
zoom fix

how do i get 1920x1080 work?

Registry changes = NO EFFECT

HIGHRES=1 in the Config file , is not fixing the aspect ratio
u can chose up to 1600 in the game menu but it doesnt change anything about
the 4:3 aspect ratio with the annoying black bars left and right.

so at the moment im able to run 1.8 hw accell and zoom fix but i cant run
the proper res and aspect ratio i desire. Especially the 4:3 is annoying.

now what do i need ..and please someone list all the requirements and locations
where to get what and maybe config file copy paste and registry screenshot .that would be great.

and yeah W I N D O W S 8 !!

I also used the fix and cranked up the resolution to 1600, but now all the text on the menu is gone. Also the game seems to run just a little bit too fast. Any idea how to fix this issues?

Bullfrog did not bug test any resolutions over 1024 x 768, so the problem with the menu disappearing was never fixed.

Teal, try the config I posted above to see if that helps your speed issue.

Devilhood already told you about the broken UI with resolutions over 1024x768. The issue with the game russing too fast is something that I think everyone with a modern rig experiences. I really have no idea how to fix this. You can try the unofficial 1.8 patch (remember to use the version 1.8 DKII-DX.exe!), but except from some fixes, this should not do anything for your specific problem. You can adjust the game's speed in the settings menu and check if you have enabled vsync, but I doubt this will help much.

no speed issues for me actually i feel it runs perfectly normal speed.

the config file posted does just about nothing.

issues so far remaining or come up

cant fix the HD aspect ratio although ive seen other people being able to play widescreen.

Game almost always crashes after finishing a level hitting space..infinite sound loop. Chances that
it will recover of the crash seem to be lower if the game ran a long time.
It also kills the mouse when doing that forcing me to relog my computer, using task manager doesnt
work ..LOL (ridicolous really).

its totally beyond me why this shouldnt be a easy fix and how this could be labeled FIX as a thread name
cuz that fix is borked to hell.

Don't use the 1.8 update. I recommend using Wyrmcast's General Improvement Mod, as it has a whole host of fixes and improvements over the default 1.7 GOG version. Here's the link
http://www.mediafire.com/download/s75kox8bgdbe4o4/GIM_v0.63.7z
Updated versions available at the KeeperKlan forum http://keeperklan.com/threads/3417-General-Improvement-Mod-A-New-Unofficial-Patch-for-DK2

Please make sure you read the GIMReadme.txt before using the mod, so you understand how to install it properly. It has a step by step guide.

If you're experiencing crashes, try running DKII-DX.EXE with compatibility mode set to Windows XP SP3. You can set the compatibility mode yourself by right clicking on the executable > Properties > Compatibility tab. This only works for DKII-DX.EXE and not DKII.EXE

You should be able to retain hardware acceleration with the normal DKII.EXE, but ONLY if you have an Nvidia graphics card. This is the preferred way of playing, but you need to make a DKII.EXE shortcut with these command line parameters -32bitdisplay -32bittextures -nointmouse
My shortcut looks like this "C:\Games\GOG Games\Dungeon Keeper 2\DKII.EXE" -32bitdisplay -32bittextures -nointmouse

If you want widescreen, you need to change the resolution in the registry. You can do this by pressing WIN+R then enter regedit.exe

Browse to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Bullfrog Productions Ltd\Dungeon Keeper II\Configuration\Video

There you will find two DWORD values which need to be changed, Screen Height and Screen Width.

Set them as you wish, but make sure that the base value is selected as Decimal otherwise it will NOT work.

I have my resolution set to 1280 x 800 and it works perfectly. I'm not experiencing the "rushing" speed problem that Teal mentioned either. Sure the scrolling is a bit fast, but you can tweak that in the options menu no problem.

Swapping from DKII.EXE to DKII-DX.EXE will reset your custom resolution, so be prepared to do the registry tweak again if that happens.

Devilhood, is the aspect ration preserved in widescreen mode? Also, why should we not use te 1.8 patch? I am playing with it as we speak, and it's working nicely so far.
Hey guys.

One thing i noticed about this game is that even though i edit the registry file and set it up to run at 1920x1080 but so far i've had no luck. Setting the game to run at 1600x1200 will still make the game run at 1024x768 with the black bars.

Am i missing something, or is it actually common? And if that's the case, is there any chance for me to add antialiasing or something? (a bit far fetched, i know).

Specs:
i5 3570k 4.5GHZ
XFX DD 7970 3GB
Win 7 SP1 x64

EDIT: After reading this topic once again to its fullest, i found a config file from Devilhood (thanks a lot!) which seems to make the game run at the designated resolution with AA but with the black bars. Still, it's much better than before. Now i just need to find a way for the game not to scroll to the other side of the universe when moving the cursor to the edges :D

Wyrmcast's primary aim is to preserve the well-balanced AI already present on patch 1.51, to fine-tune the single player campaign for a more challenging experience and to fix as many bugs as possible.

His mod comes with a comprehensive change log so you know exactly what is being done. He regularly updates his mod, interacts with the community on the KeeperKlan forums, and it also comes bundled/integrated with other maps, mods and tools by other authors.
